I have been an artist all of my life. I am also
an actor/singer and musical theater writer; which is why, perhaps,
I love the drama of color and line.
As a child I copied photos of dancers -- Pavlova,
Nureyev, Fonteyn. I continued to paint/draw forever and my work
evolved from realistic to semi-abstract forms
but it has
always been about the face and the figure, the emotion and the
form
and color. I revel in color and line.
Drawing the figure excites me and, no matter how
abstract, I always work from life. Like the audience at a play,
I immerse myself totally in the emotion of the model and the pose.
The result, on paper or canvas, is my giddy applause.
Many, many years ago I went into an art supply store
and accidentally spilled coffee on 15 vellum pads. The owner was
kind enough to sell me the pads (even then $50 each)
at
cost. Up until then Id used only pastel on paper. Now I
needed a way to use the pads. So I began to experiment with oil
pastel and pastel on the vellum. Since the vellum has little tooth
I wash the paper with turpentine, which renders a powerful, emotional,
sometimes tender, sometimes raw image --- and Ive been doing
it ever since.
Ive had the good fortune to study with well
known California born, Rockland County artist Ken Nishi; and,
at Suny Purchase, NY, with Roger Hendricks.
My work has been represented at The Manhattan Arts
and Antiques Center in NY, the Franklyn Antiques Center in Nyack,
NY and the auction for the benefit of the Helen Hayes Theater
in Nyack, NY. I have had one woman shows at The Turning Point
restaurant in Piermont, NY; the Nyack Art Walk; in several libraries,
and am included in many private collections.
I have also enjoyed creating many mother-and-child
portraits on commission. These are more representational, and
in them I try to capture the sweet innocence of that tender love.
